Chan’s Chinse Food in Fresno (near Cedar and Shields) may be one of Fresno’s hidden gems; hidden among a part of town that is relatively rundown, further hidden in a not so appealing “shopping” center, as most of the buildings around it don’t even seem to be occupied (if they are, they’re not listed on Google Maps!). You’ll be able to find it easily if you look out for Foster’s Freeze, which is more visible from the road than Chan’s. What’s crazy is that I used to live in that area; literally walking distance to Chan’s, but I wasn’t introduced to it until my boyfriend Mike. Chan’s is a relatively long running business, and probably prospered during the COVID-19 pandemic since most Chinese places have the motto of “to-go”. Despite shrinkflation’s rampage on almost all goods, from food to even apartments and housing, Chan’s offers really huge portions at a fair price.
My unflattering image for this post was only able to show the special chow mein (beef, shrimp, chicken and various veggies), which was under $10; we easily got 4 total meals out of it. You’d struggle to more than one or two meals out of a $20-$40 dish at many restaurants. We ordered their eggroll, and was surprised to see how massive the thing was; it might as well have been an eggroll burrito. Chan’s isn’t just to-go, as they have a modest dining area; sadly, there are no alcoholic beverages, but the fountain drinks at least come in huge sizes. I don’t know if this is recent or not, but they do catering now, so if you are or become a fan of Chan’s, that’s a great thing to know.
