If you’ve driven Echo Avenue between Olive and McKinley lately, you’ve probably noticed something… odd. Something that feels like it belongs in a suburban planner’s PowerPoint presentation, not on a narrow Old Fig Garden‑adjacent street with barely enough room for two cars to pass. Yes — Fresno has installed mini‑roundabouts. Yes — they’re tiny. And no — nobody seems to know why.

Echo is already a narrow corridor with inconsistent parking shoulders, tight driveways, and a mix of residential and cut‑through traffic. So naturally, the city decided this was the perfect place to drop in a series of undersized traffic circles that require drivers to give far more berth than a normal intersection, push vehicles into areas where cars used to safely queue before the “line,” confuse right‑of‑way rules, and create conflict points for right‑turning traffic. They aren’t large enough to feel like real roundabouts and make navigation harder for larger vehicles. It’s a design that looks good on a city engineering diagram but feels chaotic in real‑world Fresno driving conditions.



What We Know About the Project

Echo Avenue is on the City of Fresno’s 2025 paving and improvement list. The corridor from McKinley to Olive is undergoing resurfacing and “traffic calming enhancements.” The city has also installed similar mini‑circles on Wishon and Santa Fe near Old Fig Garden, where residents have already voiced confusion and frustration. This appears to be part of a broader push to add “neighborhood traffic circles” in older residential grids — even when the geometry of those streets makes them questionable at best.



Why These Mini‑Circles Feel Wrong for Echo

After testing the circles more thoroughly, the biggest issue isn’t U‑turns — those are possible, and most drivers wouldn’t be performing U‑turns at these intersections anyway. The real problem is how much extra space every maneuver now requires.

Drivers must swing much wider than before. On a normal intersection, you can approach the stop line, wait, and turn without drifting into the opposing lane. With these circles, the “safe waiting zone” is gone, replaced by a central island that forces cars to arc around it. Cars waiting to turn may accidentally creep too close to the circle, cars entering may swing wider than expected, and cars approaching from the right may suddenly appear in what used to be buffer space. The circles compress the usable road space in a way that feels unnatural for Echo’s width.

Larger vehicles will absolutely struggle. Pickup trucks, delivery vans, and SUVs dominate Fresno roads, and these circles require wider turning radii, more lane encroachment, and more careful positioning. A compact sedan can manage; a Ram 1500 or Amazon van does so far less gracefully.

Right‑of‑way becomes a guessing game. Because these are technically roundabouts, whoever enters first has priority. But drivers don’t expect a roundabout here, don’t treat it like one, and may stop when they shouldn’t or fail to stop when they should. It’s a recipe for slow‑motion conflict.



Mini‑Circles vs. Speed Bumps: The Lesser Evil?

One ironic upside is that these aren’t speed bumps — a type of traffic calming that often brings its own set of problems in Fresno. Speed bumps are frequently poorly installed, too tall or abrupt, placed too frequently, damaging to vehicles, and painful for passengers with back or nerve issues. But a properly designed, gradual speed hump would arguably be safer and more predictable than these “danger circles.”

Speed humps slow traffic without requiring drivers to swerve, drift into opposing lanes, negotiate confusing right‑of‑way rules, or guess what the other driver thinks the circle is supposed to be. With the mini‑circles, the unpredictability becomes the hazard. With humps, the annoyance is the hazard — but at least it’s consistent.



Community Reaction So Far

Feedback from nearby Wishon and Santa Fe installations has been… let’s say “colorful.” Residents have complained about confusion, near‑misses, emergency vehicle delays, difficulty navigating with larger vehicles, lack of public input, and lack of explanation. Echo residents are likely to echo (sorry) the same concerns once more people encounter these circles.



So What’s the Plan Here?

The city hasn’t released a detailed engineering justification for Echo’s circles. No accident data, no traffic studies, no public outreach summaries — just the vague umbrella of “traffic calming.” Maybe the goal is to slow cut‑through traffic. Maybe it’s part of a grant requirement. Maybe someone in Public Works really likes circles. Whatever the reason, the result is the same: Echo Avenue now has a series of confusing, undersized roundabouts that feel more dangerous than calming.



Final Thoughts

Echo didn’t need this. Echo needed resurfacing, maybe a few well‑designed humps, maybe better signage — not a set of mini‑circles that force drivers into awkward maneuvers and questionable right‑of‑way decisions. If the goal was to improve safety, this feels like a step sideways at best, backward at worst. But hey — at least they’re not speed bumps.
