Interesting HWY Art

Located along First Street from in between Belmont and Olive, there is a Highway 180 bridge towering above, and as of just a few months ago, I recall seeing a lane closure near this area. The closure was so that painting could commence on the bridge column and its embankment. The artwork seems to be thematically connected with the Romain Neighborhood Center (and Park) nearby, which features a Fresno Mural with the bridge clearly featured.

It seems so odd that such a mundane object could become a piece of art or a part of community; but of course, they seem to be in line with Fresno’s architecture, which is that of Brutalism (materials are highlighted; be it concrete, steel, or glass, a theme that is also quite obvious for Fresno State University’s buildings). A sort of cross is also formed as 2 Highways (41 and 180) intersect within First & Fresno Street and Belmont & Olive Avenue, separating the area into 4 distinct quadrants.

The 180 & 41 physically divide this block into 4 quadrants.
