Descendent (2025) gets an A

Last night we had the opportunity to travel to SoCal and take part of a special Collider screening of the upcoming RLJE film Descendent (2025). The screening took place at the Landmark Sunset Theater in Hollywood, California. I know we live in the age of streaming and I’m a proud owner of an 85″ 4K TV and Dolby Atmos sound system combo set up in my living room. I might even cop to the fact that Ronan and I are 4K-Dolby Atoms snobs! I must confess, it was very special treat to sit in a theatre (that was unexpectedly moved to the Dolby equipped one) with popcorn and soda in hand to watch a really good, really spooky, sci-fi type thriller. I’m a big fan of Collider and an even bigger fan this film!

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Sean Bruner, a school security guard who is haunted by childhood trauma while preparing for the birth of his first child with his wife, Andrea. After a beam of light appears in the sky during a late-night shift, Sean wakes up in the hospital with an inexplicable talent for vivid, unsettling drawings of extraterrestrials and desert landscapes. DESCENDENT hits theaters August 8, 2025.

Director: Peter Cilella Starring:  Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and Sarah Bolger (Mayans M.C.). This might be one of the best independent sci-fi thrillers I’ve seen in a long while. I think the two lead actors both hit their balls out of the park, and I love the director making an appearance in the final scene sequence. Obviously, this picture isn’t a mainstream big-budget production, but the special effects were impressive and spot-on. I’ll have more to say in the next day or two, so stay tuned!
